Deputy Medical Health Officer, Indigenous Services Canada, Saskatchewan region
I am a daughter, a partner and a friend with a lifelong heart to see each individual rise to their full potential. I am originally from Ottawa, Ontario and I am medical doctor, and a physician specialist in Public Health and Preventative Medicine. I have been grateful to have spent most of my 27 year career serving First Nations communities. For the last few years I have been increasingly aware of the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on the full range of health and social impacts we in public health are working to improve. ACEs are a core determinant of health. I have a particular interest in shifting health services, inclusive of public health services and structures, to a more trauma informed and patient centred ethos. I am very interested in the traditional and creative ways that Indigenous communities address trauma, and I think there is much learning there for the broader population. I am also very interested in ways to support people who have had a lot of ACEs in their life overcome these things using evidenced based approaches.
