Helen Okoye, PhD
Helen is a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Calgary Faculty of Social Work and holds the Alberta Children’s Hospital Postdoctoral Fellowship for Mental Health Research and Mitacs Accelerate Postdoctoral Fellowship. She completed her doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia examining the intersecting socio-structural determinants of risky behaviours among young people in sub-Saharan Africa. She argues that young people are impacted by interacting and marginalizing contextual factors globally, particularly as it relates to their mental health and engaging in behaviours that put them at health risks. Helen is a firm believer in transdisciplinary scholarship and using mixed methods research approaches to address real-world social problems affecting young people. She is interested in community-based participatory research, evidence-based frameworks and effective interventions that address children and adolescents’ mental health challenges, especially for young people impacted by adverse childhood experiences.
